Solid Waste

Solid Waste Includes:

  • Food Waste 
  • Soiled and unsalvageable paper products
  • Waxed cartons and packages (those used for beverages and frozen foods) 
  • Plastic toys
  • Utensils and tableware
  • Discarded clothing 

DOES NOT INCLUDE: 

  • Broken glass
  • Concrete
  • Construction debris
  • Propane tanks 
  • Hazardous materials (paints, solvents, car batteries, rechargeable batteries - which may be disposed of through the Town of Hempstead's S.T.O.P program - call 378-2200)

Solid waste should be places in metal or plastic containers with handles, non-attached covers, and no holes or tears, or in sealed black plastic bags.

** Limit of 50 pounds per filled container or tied bundle **

Please note: The Sanitation Department can not accept used medical needles. Used medical needles must be discarded at The Department of Health, any local hospital or nursing home. Do not discard used needles in household refuse.
